2025 Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sale - Day 1 Review
La Dorada got the Karaka Million meeting and subsequent flagship NZ yearling sale off to a good start for us with a win in the Karaka Million 2yo race on Friday night. Here she is parading as a yearling, where we had her rated 98.50/100 (A) on biomechanic ratings at the 2024 edition of the sale. We will be looking for more of the same talents over the next couple of days.
Moving to the 2025 edition of the sale, here are lots that we have highly rated so far after Day 1.

Stunning Wootton Bassett colt who got Day 1 of the sale off to a rapid start and was still top lot when the final gavel came down.
He was A rated for us on Biomechanics and A rated on Geometric scores. We have lots of respect for Curraghmore and they have a 12.32% record of Stakes Horses to yearlings offered, converting to a respectable 2.46% stakes winners to yearlings offered.
Wootton Bassett is flying in both hemispheres at the moment and has a current antepost favourite for the Golden Slipper in Wodeton.
A stakes-placed performer herself, Il Affare was a consistent runner over middle distances, securing wins at 1600m and placing in the Group 2 Royal Stakes in New Zealand. She also showed promise at elite level with a fourth-place finish in the New Zealand Derby (Gr.1). Il Affare is a full sister to the tough stayer Clever Man, a multiple winner up to 2500m with black-type placings in the SAJC Port Adelaide Cup.
She is also a half-sister to the accomplished sprinter Full of Beauty, who captured the Group 3 National Day Cup in Hong Kong and was competitive at Group 2 level.
The next generation brings in further black-type quality through Pennacchio, an eight-time winner from 1200m to 1600m, including victories at Listed level in Australia and New Zealand.
Pennacchio’s dam Abenroad, though lightly raced, produced the stakes-winning filly Strada Cavallo, who was runner-up in the prestigious New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr.1) and placed in multiple Group 1 races.
The maternal foundation traces back to the Argentine mare Libia, a multiple stakes winner who excelled in sprint distances in South America. Her influence, coupled with Northern Hemisphere speed, brings a unique international flair to this pedigree.
